A driver was pronounced dead following a head-on crash on a housing estate in Swindon.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance landed in Mannington Recreation Ground, so its specialist critical care medics could tend to the male casualty.

Despite the best efforts of members of the public who stopped the help, ambulance crews and police, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed.

The driver of the other vehicle involved was left shaken, but uninjured.

The road is expected to remain closed until around 7pm while specialist officers investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

One line of enquiry is understood to be that the man suffered a medical episode prior to the collision.

Local residents, who need to access Padstow Road and Saltash Road are being asked to park their vehicles nearby and walk to their homes.
