The route was shut between A350 (Chicklade) and A36 (Deptford) for several hours while the fire was extinguished and the scene cleared.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Rescue Service said three fire engines attended the incident – where the vehicle and derelict building were found ablaze.

A spokesperson said: “We were called to the A303 at Chicklade at 8.02pm last night after a car left the highway and collided with a derelict building.

“Three crews attended, from Mere, Tisbury and Shaftesbury, and they found both the car and building well alight.

“Two breathing apparatus wearers, two hose reel jets and a main jet were used to extinguish the fire, and our stop was at 9.19pm.

“The occupants of the car were out of the vehicle when we arrived.”

Wiltshire Police confirmed that the driver sustained only minor injuries and no arrests have been made.
