Officers put the wounded dog into their car and blue-lighted it to Hale Vets for urgent care. It’s understood the pet died a short time later.

The vehicle involved in the incident is said to have failed to stop and police have launched an investigation.

It’s not clear why the dogs were in the road, but the owners were not present at the time. They were informed and attended the vets.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “If anyone saw what happened or has information that could help with our enquiries, please contact us on 101 quoting reference number 54230056173.”
