Speculation on social media has been rife, with suggestion a robbery took place and somebody entered the canal.

However, Wiltshire Police said they were attending a “mental health episode” – but the force would not confirm any further details given the circumstances.

South Western Ambulance Service said that they sent one double-crewed ambulance, a rapid response vehicle, an operations officer and an air ambulance.

It’s not clear if the patient was taken home, to hospital, a place of safety or custody following the incident.
