Cyclist found riding along motorway in Swindon escorted off by police

A cyclist was found riding on a motorway in Swindon this afternoon (Thursday).

Traffic officers stopped the man as he pedalled his bicycle along the M4 at Junction 16.

A force spokesperson said the cyclist was following the sav-nav, which suggested the motorway was the quickest route to his intended destination.

‘The M4 might be the quickest way as suggested by a sat nav but please don’t follow directions blindly when using a pedal cycle’, they said.

Adding: ‘[Officers] safely escorted this rider off the motorway.’

It’s illegal to cycle on motorways in the UK, thought it’s not yet clear whether the man was dealt with for the offence. Wiltshire Police has been approached for comment.
