Council ‘working with police to move on travellers’ near Swindon retail park

A group of travellers have moved onto land behind a retail park in Swindon over the weekend.

Wiltshire Police were called to the scene shortly after their arrival near to Mannington Retail Park late last week but said that the case was a matter for the local council.

The travellers are believed to have accessed the field without any damaging property, setting up at the rear – just a stone’s throw from Rushy Platt Industrial Estate.

There are a number of caravans and at least three branded work vans on the site, all promoting tree and gardening services.

Swindon Borough Council says they don’t have any major concerns about the incursion.

A spokesperson said: “We have visited the site and carried out welfare checks. We are in the process of monitoring the group and will work with Wiltshire Police to move them on.”
