‘Completely lost’ lorry driver convicted over crash which left man trapped in van

A Cambridgeshire lorry driver was convicted over a crash that left a man trapped in a van for more than an hour.

Emergency services, including three fire crews, were called to the collision involving 28-year-old James Foreman’s Scania lorry and a Mercedes Sprinter on the A346 in Chiseldon last summer – as first reported by Wiltshire 999s.

At around 6pm on 11 August, Foreman, of Wisbech, turned on to the main road from The Butts believing he had a large enough gap but braked, causing the van to crash into the back of his H. E. Payne Transport vehicle.

More than a dozen firefighters, supported by police and ambulance crew, worked at the scene for three hours – freeing the van passenger using hydraulic cutting equipment. He suffered minor injuries.

He appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 2 March for sentencing after earlier admitting driving without due care and attention by post.

Foreman said he was “completely lost” due to multiple diversions in place in the area and being unfamiliar with Swindon. He offered “sincere apologies to all parties concerned”.

Magistrates imposed nine points on his driving license, fined him £420 and ordered him to pay £152 in costs and victim surcharges.
