Calne stabbing: Ex-partner ‘narrowly missed victim’s heart’, court told

A man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of his former partner.

Martin Cundliffe is accused of repeatedly stabbing Tanya Billing during a frenzied attack in her own home in Lawrence Drive, Calne, on Saturday afternoon (2 December).

At Swindon Magistrates’ Court today (Monday), prosecutor Tony Nowogrodzki said that the victim – aged in her 30s – was found with “multiple stab wounds all over her body”.

Most notably, Ms Billing sustained two stab wounds to her chest – which are said to have “narrowly missed her heart”. She remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Mr Nowogrodzki said the victim sought help from a neighbour before armed police force entry to her home. It’s claimed they found the 62-year-old suspect stabbing himself in the chest.

District Judge Joanna Dickens remanded Cundliffe into custody. He will next appear before a crown court – either Swindon or Bristol – for a plea and trial preparation hearing on 5 January.
