Bradford on Avon warned as emergency flood barriers withdrawn from use

Emergency flood defence barriers have been withdrawn from use over safety concerns.

The Environment Agency now won’t deploy the system to help prevent flooding in Bradford on Avon if the River Avon rises to a concerning level.

Though some locals believe the flood barriers weren’t of any use anyway – and when the river burst its banks, flooding happened regardless.

In a statement to residents, Bradford on Avon Town Council wrote: “With the river level higher, it is important for residents and businesses to be aware that the temporary flood defences in the town were withdrawn by the Environment Agency.

“It said that the barrier was no longer considered safe following a review of its operational activities relating to the use of temporary barriers.

“The Environment Agency said it is still committed to working with partners to source funding to develop a capital flood alleviation scheme in Bradford on Avon.”
