Wiltshire Air Ambulance was also tasked to the incident, but the helicopter was stood down when it arrived – circling the scene numerous times before returning to its Semington base.

The casualty, who is said to have suffered what are believed to be life-changing injuries, was rushed to hospital. She remains stable at this time.

Officers have arrested two men on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Both men remain in custody at Gablecross Police Station, where they are due to be questioned.

Work at the address where the attack took place is ongoing. Forensics have been at the location today and it remains cordoned off as a crime scene.

Several neighbours, who have been visited by officers investigating the incident, claim the woman was attacked with a knife during the violent assault.

“A cordon will remain in place at the address while investigations continue”, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said.

They added: “We’d like to reassure the local community that we are treating this as an isolated incident at this stage and we do not believe there to be any wider threat to the public.”

The force refused to confirm what caused the woman’s injuries.
