Arrest made after police called to fight involving man armed with hammer

A man has been arrested after police were called to a fight in Chippenham.

Officers raced to the scene in Marshfield Road shortly after 1pm today but a member of the public had already intervened.

One of the suspects – armed with a hammer – was chased by the Good Samaritan into the Bath Road Car Park, off Bridge Roundabout, where he was detained.

He was soon arrested by officers on suspicion of common assault and possession of class A drugs.

The hammer was discarded by the suspect during the foot pursuit, but thanks to police dog Betty, it was recovered and seized as evidence.

Wiltshire Police say there were “no reported injuries”.
