Police soon ascertained that the sounds were caused by fireworks.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “You may have heard the police helicopter in the Westbury area last night, so we want to provide some reassurance about the incident they were dealing with.

“At around 9.45pm last night (21/07) we received a call from a member of the public concerned that they had heard gunshots in the Yarnbrook area.

“Due to the nature of the call, armed response officers attended and were supported by the police helicopter.
