Armed police called to village near Devizes after New Years Day gunman sighting

Armed police were called to a village near Devizes on New Years Day after a gun was spotted.

A member of the public called 999 when they thought they saw a man with a firearm in West Lavington – five miles south of Devizes – at around 1.30pm on Monday 1 January.

Approximately ten armed officers – travelling in four marked vehicles and one unmarked vehicle – attended an area near the former Chocolate Poodle public house (now an apartment block).

It turned out the gunman was actually a licenced firearms holder and shooting on private land.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “As a precaution and based on information provided, armed officers attended the scene. Enquiries were carried out and it was confirmed a registered licenced firearms holder had permission to be shooting on private property in the area.”
