A gang armed with weapons have forced entry into a block of flats in Chippenham.

Firearms officers were deployed after police received a report of a group of males entering a building in the Gladstone Road area shortly after 9pm last night (Sunday, 28 August).

When officers arrived at the scene, the group had fled the area – sparking a manhunt.

The National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter from Bristol was sent to assist with searching the area, circling Chippenham for just short of two hours.

At least seven armed response units from Wiltshire, and from the Gloucestershire force area, could be seen gathering in the Lidl car park, off Pewsham Way. Several roads policing unit vehicles and two dog units were also in attendance.

NPAS didn’t leave the area until shortly after midnight and isn’t believed to have located any suspects.

Wiltshire Police did however arrest a man in his 30s on suspicion of breaching a restraining order in connection with the incident. He remains in custody.
