Alcoholic chocolate thief will spend Christmas behind bars after latest crime spree

A prolific Swindon thief has been jailed after stealing products to fund his addiction.

David Mundy, 32, pleaded guilty to taking more than £300 worth of chocolate from The Co-operative Food store in Beechcroft Road on several occasions in November and December.

He also admitted stealing household items, alcohol and consumables from the shop and another Co-op in Windbrook Meadow – totalling around £180.

Kate Prince, prosecuting, described his crimes as “straight forward”.

The thief – with 80 similar convictions on his record – walked into the stores, collected items and left without paying. He was not stopped by staff during any of the 12 new offences.

Gordon Hotson, defending, said his client feels “disappointed with himself”.

He claimed he’d started to turn his life around with a “degree of success” since his release from prison a short time ago.

But magistrates jailed him for six months, suggesting Mundy would say anything to ‘ensure his gets his liberty’.
