A420 crash: Driver arrested as woman, 25, critically wounded

A driver has been arrested after a woman was critically wounded in a crash on the A420.

Emergency services were called to the major route in Watchfield, near Swindon, after a single-vehicle crash at 10.05pm on New Year’s Eve (31 December).

A black Volkswagen Golf left the carriageway, hitting trees and coming to rest on its roof back in the middle of the road.

A 25-year-old female passenger sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, where she remains in a critical condition.

A 23-year-old man, from Kidlington, has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving whilst unfit through drink and using a motor vehicle on a road/public place without insurance. He remains in custody at this time.

DC Nigel Doyle of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “I am appealing to anybody who witnessed this collision or who may have dash-cam footage capturing the collision or the moments leading up to it to please get in touch with Thames Valley Police.
