A homeless man with ‘not long to live’ has been kicked out of a disused building doorway in Swindon town centre, as it is boarded up with chipboard.
The heartless act took place on the Thursday 29 March, when the homeless people who live in the doorways of the former Liquor Lounge property on Fleet Street were away from their beds.
Before the three doorways were boarded up, their processions were tossed into the street and ruined by heavy rain that fall throughout the afternoon.
A spokesperson for Swindon Homeless Volunteers said: “The homeless men who was sleeping in the front doorway is not very well. He’s been told that he does not have long left to live.
“He had a stroke recently, and he was only sleeping there. It was easy for us to find him and keep an eye on him while he was there. He’s an older gent, a very kind man.
“Unfortunately due to this boarding up, he’s had to move out of the town centre area, out of sight of our regular night walks. He will eventually pass away, alone.
“The former Liquor Lounge building is not being used. There are so many empty buildings in Swindon – why can’t some of them be opened up permanently for the homeless to take shelter.
“When they boarded up the doorways, the rough sleepers’ possessions were just chucked into the rain like rubbish. Why couldn’t he sleep there? That doorway was someone’s home.”
Despite enquiries, we were unable to make contact with the building owner.
