A simple two vehicle road traffic collision turned into much more tonight, after an unrelated group of men began to abuse the police officers dealing with the incident.
Emergency services were dealing with the crash – involving a silver Ford Mondeo and a grey Audi A3 – on Faringdon Road in Swindon town centre at around 8pm.
While a casualty was being checked over in the back of an ambulance, a group of three intoxicated men walked past the incident shouting obscenities at the 999 crews on scene.
One of the three became violent towards officers, and was subsequently arrested.
During the commotion, the officers dealing with the man requested backup from nearby units. A armed response unit and a dog unit raced to the scene to assist.
Those involved in the crash are understood to have suffered only minor injuries.
The road, on the junction with Farnsby Street, was clear by 9pm.
