A fully-loaded car transporter has crashed off the motorway near Wiltshire.
The dramatic incident happened on the M4 eastbound just after Junction 18 (Bath) at around 11am this morning (Monday) and caused major delays in the area.
The large lorry – carrying numerous cars – left the carriageway and overturned, but nobody’s believed to have been seriously injured.
Lanes 1 and 2 were shut eastbound from Junction 18 (Bristol) until about 12.30pm when it was reduced to a closure of just one lane past the crash site.
However, the entry slip road onto the motorway eastbound towards Junction 17 is also closed to motorists.
Recovery work is expected to continue at the scene for several hours – with some delays in the area likely.
A National Highways update this afternoon said: “Lane 1 (of 3) is now closed on the #M4 eastbound between J18 (Bath) and J17 (Chippenham) alongside the J17 eastbound entry slip to allow recovery to take place safely.
“Delays of 20 minutes and approx. 2 miles of congestion on approach.”
