New College bomb threat: Police dogs start search as probe continues

An investigation into a suspicious package at New College in Swindon is continuing.

Emergency services were called to reports of a suspicious package at the North Star site at about 1pm this afternoon (Thursday), sparking a full-scale evacuation of several buildings.

The package “was found not to be a cause for concern”, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police confirmed earlier – but investigations on scene were ongoing at 4pm.

They added: “Precautionary checks are still taking place but there is not thought to be any ongoing threat.”

Witnesses report seeing a significant police presence, including police dogs which appear to be searching.

Meanwhile, hundreds of students have been told to go home – and won’t be able to collect possessions.

A spokesperson for New College said: “Classes are cancelled for the day and students are allowed to go home ON FOOT, unless you are parked in the back car park, in which case you can use the bus lane onto Great Western Way.

“Please do not retrieve your belongings at this time unless you are in Gemini or Orion. Go straight home.

“With roads still closed immediately around the campus, the following pick-up points can be used: Oasis car park, accessed via Hawksworth Estate (not North Star Avenue), Applegreen garage or St Marks Recreation Ground.”
