Fear for the lives of homeless people as plumes of smoke come from car park

There was fear for the lives of a dozen homeless people who reside in a Swindon car park this morning, as plumes of smoke could be seen coming from an upper floor.

Three fire crews from Swindon, Stratton and Westlea fire stations were called to the Fleming Way car park on Gordon Gardens at around 11am today after reports of a blaze.

Firefighters at the scene of the car blaze

One eyewitness, who didn’t want to be named, told Wiltshire 999s at the scene: “I’m so worried that the homeless people have lost their tents. They live up there and there’s been a tent fire here before.

“I really hope no one’s been killed. The wardens won’t let me up as I know them [homeless people].”

The car was well alight when firefighters arrived

However, it’s been confirmed that a car, thought to be a Ford Mondeo, went up in flames. It’s understood that no one has been injured during the incident.

Police are investigating the incident, and say it may have been started deliberately. Anyone with information should call Wiltshire Police on 101.
