Woman who fled near-fatal crash jailed as top traffic cop speaks out

A top traffic cop has spoken out after a woman who fled a near-fatal crash in Wiltshire was jailed.

Sergeant Rich Hatch said that Chloe Thynne “showed little to no remorse” after she ploughed head-on into another vehicle near Malmesbury – leaving the occupants seriously wounded.

Despite the 38-year-old, of Top Farm, Kemble, seeing the damaged caused to 18-year-old William Pike’s Nissan Micra, she left the scene and did not call for help.

At Swindon Crown Court today (Tuesday), she was jailed for four years and four months – after admitting three charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving – read the full court story.

Sgt Hatch, who dealt with the aftermath in his role with the Serious Collision Investigation Team, said: “This has been an arduous two years for the three young men, and their families affected by this collision, and I am extremely grateful to all of them for their commitment to this case.

“The defendant made a choice on the day back in October 2021 to drive her car in such a manner that she did not think of the possible consequences and with no regard to other road users.

“When things did go horribly wrong, she fled the scene and showed little to no remorse towards the three men in the other car.

“Today’s sentence should serve as a warning to all motorists that the split-second actions and decisions taken by drivers can result in horrendous injuries which not only affect the victims and their futures but their wider families as well.”

For the past month, Wiltshire Police have been running a campaign focusing on the Fatal Five offences: speeding, drink and drug driving, using a phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt, and careless or dangerous driving.

These are the offences which significantly increase the risk of people being involved in a serious or fatal collision.

If you suspect somebody of drink or drug driving, please call 101 or 999 in an emergency and give as much information as possible including a description of the driver, vehicle and direction of travel.
