UPDATE: Woman ‘brandishing hammer’ at primary school arrested by police
Two schools in Wiltshire were locked down as police officers rushed to an incident.
The Ridgeway School and Wroughton Junior School were forced to protect pupils as a person – reportedly armed with a weapon – attempted to gain entry to the site this morning (Tuesday).
Principal Adrian Cush confirmed, in a letter to parents, that teachers placed both establishments into lockdown as police responded and apprehended the suspect before 10am.
He wrote: “This morning, during period 1, we had to enter a period of lockdown. This was due to a member of the public attempting to enter the school site.
“This person was unable to enter the school building and both The Ridgeway and Wroughton Juniors went into lockdown.
“Police attended the scene quickly and apprehended the member [of the] public.
“Whilst this may be concerning for all of us as a community, our school systems and members of staff reacted in a prompt professional way ensuring the safety of the whole school community.
“We will be reassuring every student through assemblies this morning, and lessons have now returned to normal. We will be working with the appropriate authorities and will write to you to further update you.”
