Chippenham crash: Two in hospital as van ‘ploughs head-on into car’

Two people are in hospital following a crash on a main road in Chippenham.

Emergency services were called to the A4 London Road, between the Platinum Hyundai dealership and Pewsham Roundabout, at around 5pm yesterday (Friday 7 July).

A blue Ford Transit Custom reportedly struck an oncoming silver Honda Jazz head-on – whilst travelling on the wrong side of the road.

It’s claimed the Honda driver tried to avoid the collision by turning onto the grass verge, but was hit by the vehicle and subsequently both ended up in the undergrowth.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the incident, helping to free a female trapped in the Honda and making the scene safe.

The male driver of the Ford and the woman driver of the Honda, aged in her 60s, were rushed to hospital with injuries – which are believed to be serious but not life-changing.

Police closed the road in both directions between Derry Hill and Pewsham Roundabout.

At 6.15pm, the driver of a red Citroen contravened the road closure – despite cones, a police road closure sign and a white van with amber lights blocking the route.

The driver – who drove the wrong side of the traffic island to access the road – was given a telling-off by a PCSO before being told to reverse his vehicle out of the middle of the ongoing incident by a roads policing officer.

At the height of the incident, a fire crew, two ambulances, an ambulance operations officer, and numerous police vehicles were in attendance.

The road remained closed until 11pm whilst police waited to hear from the hospital about the pair’s injuries and then arranged recovery. A forensic collision investigation was not deemed necessary due to the level of injuries sustained.

Wiltshire Police say no arrests were made.
