Police swarm Malmesbury as helicopter circles above in urgent search

UPDATE: ‘Suicidal’ missing man from Gloucester sparks search of Wiltshire town

Police have swarmed a market town in north Wiltshire this evening (Monday).

Numerous units were spotted driving around Malmesbury as the National Police Air Service helicopter circled above for approximately 45 minutes from around 5.30pm.

Most police officers in attendance were from neighbouring Gloucestershire Constabulary, suggesting that the incident began over the county border.

Some units were however from Wiltshire Police – including a dog handler who was deployed to search Malmesbury Cemetery and the surrounding areas.

It’s understood officers were on the urgent hunt for a man, but it’s not yet clear why he’s wanted – it could be related to a welfare concern or because he’s a suspect.

Police vehicles were parked in King’s Wall, Hayes Cross and Tetbury Hill to name just a few locations.

Around five officers reportedly entered a property nearby and visited two pubs on High Street.

No further details are known at this stage. The forces involved will be approached for comment – details are likely to be provided tomorrow.
