Woman arrested as cyclist ‘being towed by car’ seriously hurt in Melksham

A woman’s been arrested after a cyclist was seriously hurt in Melksham on Wednesday (31 May).

A man, aged in his 40s, was reportedly – by choice – holding onto the side of a moving car as he was towed along Spa Road on a red bicycle at around 6.30pm.

Unable to maintain his connection to the vehicle, he fell off and sustained significant injuries – described as potentially life-changing by police.

After being treated by local ambulance crews and Wiltshire Air Ambulance medics, he was airlifted to Southmead Hospital for urgent treatment.

The driver of the car, a local woman in her 40s, left the scene but was later found at a property nearby.

She was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and for drug driving and remains in custody for questioning.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We are appealing for witnesses to either the collision or for anyone who may have dashcam footage of the incident or the lead up to it.
