E-scooter rider, 17, sentenced after causing crash in Chippenham

An e-scooter rider has been sentenced after causing a crash in Chippenham.

The 17-year-old local boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, collided with a car on Malmesbury Road at around 5pm on 22 November last year.

At Swindon Magistrates’ Court this morning (Tuesday), he pleaded guilty to careless driving, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

Electric scooters are illegal to use in public in Wiltshire and are classed as motor vehicles – meaning riders must effectively follow the same rules as drivers and bikers.

The boy was taken to hospital with a head injury following the incident, which left a car damaged. He wasn’t seriously wounded and Wiltshire Air Ambulance was stood down en route.

Magistrates fined him £111 and imposed a six-month driving ban. He must also pay a £26 surcharge.
