Man stabbed in Devizes town centre, Wiltshire Police confirm

A man has been stabbed in Devizes town centre, according to police.

At around 12.30pm police were called to the Monday Market Street area following a report that a man had been stabbed in the leg. The offender had fled the scene.

Police and paramedics were quickly on the scene and the victim, a 37-year-old local man, was taken to hospital. His injury is not thought to be life threatening and his family are aware.

Officers commenced a searches for the suspect and a short time later a vehicle was stopped in Windsor Drive. A 24 year old local man was arrested on suspicion of Grievous bodily harm with intent. He currently remains in custody at Melksham Police Station.

Acting Detective Sergeant, Michelle Hilton said: “An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident and it is very early on but we believe that this was an isolated incident and that the victim and suspect were known to each other.

We would like to thank the members of the public who have already helped us with our enquiries and would encourage anyone else who has information to come forward.

I would also like to praise the excellent work of the team, those officers who gave first aid to the victim and those who very quickly located the suspect.”
