Calne father pleads guilty to downloading abhorrent child abuse images

A father has pleaded guilty to downloading abhorrent child abuse images on the internet.

43-year-old Martin Tyrrell admitted two charges relating to eleven indecent images when he appeared at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court on Friday (31 March).

The father-of-three was caught when police received information relating to his email address being used to access illicit content on the web in Devizes in 2022.

Prosecutor Asha Seenauth said it was linked to the defendant, of Lambourn Court, Calne, and officers later raided his home. They seized digital devices before arresting him at his place of work.

Eleven indecent images were found on one of the devices – with one being a Category A graded image, the most severe.

In custody, he told officers that he did not want a solicitor and denied the allegations, claiming he was home when the material was accessed. But near the end of the interview, he made admissions.

Mr George, defending, said his client was referred to the mental health team after making his admissions. They referred him to Stop It Now and he has since completed a programme with them.

“He has learned a good deal about himself and his offending behaviour”, he said. Adding: “He is now about to stop it himself.”

The case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report. Tyrrell will return to Salisbury Magistrates’ Court for sentence on 1 June.

He was released on unconditional bail and told to register as a sex offender within 72 hours.
