Police respond to first football-related disorder before 10am

It’s only 10am, but Wiltshire Police have already attended a football-related incident.

PC Andy Ross, who is policing the Swindon Town and Oxford United, which kicks of at 12pm, said that police responded to ‘some disorder’ earlier this morning.

Earlier in the week, police appealed to the thousands of supporters attending the match today, Sunday 5 February, to support the police and both clubs in making public safety a priority before, during, and after the event.

Superintendent Adrian Burt, Match Commander, said: “We are working closely with our partner agencies, including Swindon and Oxford Football Clubs, to make this a safe and enjoyable experience for all whilst reducing the impact of this event to the local community.

“The public will notice an increase in police presence before, during and after the match. This is to maintain public safety whilst minimising community disruption.

“Body worn video cameras will be used by officers in order to support this event. The use of these cameras will help assist the police with capturing evidence for prosecutions in turn providing speedier justice.

“Please ensure if you are travelling to Swindon to plan your journey well in advance as this event is likely to be a near sell out. As the game is on a Sunday please also be aware of the Sunday trading hours, and that there will be a reduced amount of licensed premises opening as a result.

“We encourage all supporters to enjoy themselves but we ask for your support to make it a safe event for all attending, and for the local community.”
