Man stabbed in alleyway near Swindon pub as police arrest 20-year-old

A man was rushed to hospital after being stabbed near a pub in Swindon last night.

Emergency services were called to The Shield and Dagger public house in Thames Avenue at around 9.30pm last night (Friday 26 November) following reports of an incident.

Punters had been watching England play the USA at the establishment prior to a man being knifed in a nearby alleyway – before the victim sought help from staff who called an ambulance.

The victim was taken to Great Western Hospital to be treated for knife wounds described by police as serious but not life-threatening or life-changing.

Wiltshire Police has confirmed that officers arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. He is currently in police custody.

A crime scene was put in place across part of Thames Avenue, close to the pub, until the early hours of this morning (Saturday).

Witnesses claim the victim and suspect were drinking in The Shield and Dagger before the knife attack.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We responded to reports of an incident at the Shield and Dagger Pub in Thames Avenue, Swindon at about 9.30pm yesterday.

“A man was taken to Great Western Hospital to be treated for suspected knife injuries not thought to be life threatening or life changing.

“We arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. He is currently in police custody.”
