Three of the five casualties sustained serious injuries. Two men and woman were rushed to the Regional Major Trauma Centre at Bristol’s Southmead Hospital.

Another man and woman received treatment at Royal United Hospital in Bath for minor injuries.

The road, between the A4 (Bath) and the A420 (Cold Ashton), was closed for more than eight hours while emergency services attended the scene and a forensic collision investigation was carried out.

The route reopened at shortly after 6am.
