Suspect in alleged abduction attempt in Swindon ‘mistook the girl’s identity’

Wiltshire Police says a man suspected of attempting to abduct a child in Swindon simply ‘mistook the girl’s identity’ and no crime was committed.

Officers responded to reports of a male approaching a nine-year-old girl in Pinehurst at around 5.45pm yesterday evening (Monday, 22 August).

But the suspect remained in the area and provided a full account to officers when they arrived.

No arrests were made, but the man was given words of advice.

In a statement, a force spokesperson said: “At 5.45pm yesterday officers were called to an incident in The Circle, Pinehurst, following a report that a nine year old girl had been approached by a man who attempted to engage her in conversation.

“When police were called, the man remained in the area to explain to officers he had mistaken the girl’s identity and words of advice were given.

“No arrests have been made.”
