Man arrested at gunpoint by armed police after having ‘sword’ in Chippenham street

A man has been arrested at gunpoint after he was spotted with a ‘sword’ in the street.

Local police officers rushed to the scene in Chippenham at around 7.30pm yesterday (Sunday, 17 July).

On arrival, they requested assistance from specialist firearms officers to enter the property and apprehend the poentially armed and dangerous suspect.

Stockwood Road, Chelwood Close and Southmead were closed while officers deal with the incident.

Within an hour, the situation was over – with officers detaining a 39-year-old local man inside a flat.

He was arrested on suspicion of possession of a weapon in a public place. The suspect remains in custody this morning (Monday, 18 July) and an investigation is ongoing.

Wiltshire Police confirmed that a wooden replica sword was seized.
