Wiltshire churchyard cordoned off as crime scene after human bones ‘dug up’

Human bones were discovered ‘dug up’ in a churchyard in Wiltshire on Saturday.

Police were alerted to the find at around 5pm yesterday afternoon (7 May) and cordoned off the area ahead of urgent forensic investigation work.

Locals spotted a large police presence in High Street, Royal Wootton Bassett, as officers taped off and guarded the grounds around St. Bartholomew’s Church.

Specialist police staff probed how the suspected human bones had come to the surface but soon after the circumstances were deemed non-suspicious.

“It is strongly believed the bones had been brought to the surface during planting taking place”, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said.

Adding that there are “not believed to be any suspicious circumstances”.
