Screens erected on M4 in Swindon as bridge directly above cordoned off by police

A bridge over the M4 has been partially condoned off following a welfare incident.

Emergency services were called to a serious incident on the motorway in Swindon early this morning (Sunday, 5 December).

Large screens have been erected around an area on the westbound carriageway below Croft Road – the dual carriageway section which brings motorists into Wroughton.

One lane on Croft Road has been coned off, with crime scene tape preventing people from accessing the footpath. A police officer is guarding the area.

The M4 is expected to remain closed between junctions 15 and 16 for several hours – possible into the early afternoon.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: Please be aware that the M4 is closed in both directions this morning between Junction 15 and Junction 16 due to an ongoing incident.

“If you need to travel on that part of the M4 this morning please be aware and follow the diversions in place.

“We will provide an update when the road has reopened.”
