Officers conducted extensive neighbourhood enquiries following the incident and a 15-year-old local boy was arrested on suspicion of arson.

He is currently in custody at Gablecross police station for further questioning.

Acting Sgt Keith Macdonald said: “This type of mindless behaviour is just completely unacceptable – as a result of this fire, this popular piece of equipment is completely out of action for the young children living nearby who enjoy the facilities on a regular basis.

“I’d like to thank local residents for their assistance with our enquiries this morning which led us to the arrest of a local teenager in connection with the arson.”
