Other officers were seen in Newcastle Street and another ARV was parked near a footpath and greenspace which leads to Spring Gardens.

According to a witness, other police vehicles were sighted patrolling the area for the duration of the incident – which could have started as early as 2pm.

She told Wiltshire 999s: “There were police cars everywhere. There were loads of police behind the chip shop in the alley for a while.

“Something big must of (sic) happened as it was a lot of police for something minor. My guess would be someone had a weapon as some of the police had guns out.”

Another local claimed he saw at least six or seven police officers at the scene.

“When I come (sic) back past about 20 minutes later, it just seemed very quiet. There were a lot of police officers stood around talking and a few police cars driving around”, he said.

The nature of the incident is currently unknown – Wiltshire Police was approached for comment but has not provided a response.
