It’s believed four cars and a lorry – part of a highways maintenance fleet – were involved in the collision.

In an updated statement, Wiltshire Police said: “We were called to reports of a serious road traffic incident on the A419 shortly after 9.30am involving five vehicles.

“The road has been closed northbound to allow emergency services to attend and drivers are advised to avoid the area. The southbound carriageway is open.

“Two people were hurt in the incident, their injuries are not described as life threatening or life limiting.

“Road closures remain in place at this time.”

National Highways say that recovery work is nearly complete, meaning the road should be open before 6pm.
