A419 in Swindon closed both directions after serious crash, police say

The A419 in Swindon has been closed in both directions after a crash involving a number of vehicles, including a lorry.

Emergency services responded to reports of a road traffic collision, near the junction with Hyde Road, Stratton, at around 9.30am this morning (26 August).

The road has been shut by police between Commonhead Roundabout and the Blunsdon interchange.

Photographs seen by Wiltshire 999s show at least one car, a Volvo, and a lorry damaged and surrounded by 999 crews. Other reports suggest several vehicles are involved.

UPDATE 4.30PM

National Highways say recovery work is underway at the scene. It’s not clear how long this operation will take, or whether the road will reopen before 5pm.

National Highways has confirmed the road remains closed northbound.

UPDATE 12.15PM

A spokesperson for South Western Ambulance Service said: “We were called at around 9.30am about a serious road traffic incident involving five vehicles on the A419 in Swindon.

“Our colleagues treated multiple patients at the scene, and conveyed four of them to hospital by land for further care.”

UPDATE 11AM

Wiltshire Police has confirmed five vehicles were involved in the collision, but no fatalities have been reported.

“We were called to reports of a serious road traffic incident on the A419 shortly after 9.30am today (26/08) involving five vehicles”, a spokesperson said.

They added: “The road has been closed northbound to allow emergency services to attend and drivers are advised to avoid the area. The southbound carriageway is open.

“There are no reported fatalities.”

UPDATE 10.40AM

The southbound carriageway has reopened, according to National Highways.

A spokesperson for the agency said: “Wiltshire Police have informed us that the Southbound carriageway of the A419 Swindon has now reopened. The Northbound carriageway remains closed whilst Police continue their work at scene.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed they are in attendance.

UPDATE 10.15AM

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Drivers are advised to avoid the A419 in Swindon following a serious road traffic accident.

“Closures are in place from the Honda roundabout northbound and motorists are advised to avoid the area or face significant delays.

“The road is expected to be closed for some hours. We will update when the road reopens.”
