60-year-old man elects crown court trial over PCSO assault allegations

A man accused of assaulting two police community support officers (PCSO) in Swindon town centre faces a trial by jury.

Uplifter Nicholson, 60, appeared before Swindon Magistrates’ Court this morning charged with two counts of assaulting an emergency worker in May this year. He denies the allegations.

Despite magistrates accepting jurisdiction, Nicholson elected a trial at Swindon Crown Court.

Crown prosecutor Pauline Lambert claimed the defendant, of Saxon Court, Old Town, pushed PCSO Claudemir De-Oliveria to the chest and grabbed PCSO Abbie Sims by the wrist and arm to push her.

The officers were trying to deal with a disturbance in Swindon town centre at around 5.30pm on Saturday 29 May.

Nicholson refused to stand up when asked by the bench, shouting “Black Lives Matter” from the dock. He stands up after being asked a number of times by various people in the courtroom.

He will next appear at Swindon Crown Court on 24 September.
