Man ‘with gun’ tasered by armed police as they respond to help ambulance crew

A man ‘with a gun’ was tasered by police in Royal Wootton Bassett last night.

Armed police were deployed to the town at around 8.50pm following a call from the ambulance service reporting a concern for the welfare of a male patient.

Officers arrived at the scene in Eveleigh Road and made attempts to calm the man down, however, their efforts were unsuccessful and he was eventually tasered.

Local residents report seeing several police cars, at least four firearms officers and an ambulance blocking the cul-de-sac as they attended the serious incident.

A man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

He was initially taken to Great Western Hospital but was later released and taken to custody at Gablecross Police Station where he remains.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “At approximately 8.50pm last night (20/04), we were called by the ambulance service to a concern for welfare for a male patient at an address on Eveleigh Road, Royal Wootton Bassett.

“Due to the nature of the call, officers, supported by firearms officers, attended.

“A man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm, with a taser deployed.

“He was taken to Great Western Hospital before being taken to Gablecross Police Station, where he remains in custody.”
