DATE CONFIRMED: You’ll be able to see family and friends soon – but not indoors

Lockdown sucks. We know. But from just over a month’s time, you’ll be able to spend time with family and friends again, the Prime Minister is due to announce.

The government will also reopen schools for all pupils from 8 March, according to Sky News.

From the 29 March, meeting your loved ones will be allowed but only in outdoor spaces.

However, this is said to include your own private garden as well as public spaces like parks – where friends will be able to meet for a picnic.

The gatherings will be limited though to six people from a maximum of two households. It means partners, who do not live together, can finally meet up and again legally.

Outdoor sports facilities, golf clubs and sports clubs like grassroots football, will also reopen from 29 March.

These changes to the rules are the first stage of the four-part roadmap out of lockdown. The reopening of non-essential retail and hospitality isn’t in stage one of the roadmap but is expected before the end of May.

In a statement ahead of the announcement, Boris Johnson said: “Our priority has always been getting children back into school which we know is crucial for their education as well as their mental and physical wellbeing, and we will also be prioritising ways for people to reunite with loved ones safely.

“Our decisions will be made on the latest data at every step, and we will be cautious about this approach so that we do not undo the progress we have achieved so far and the sacrifices each and every one of you has made to keep yourself and others safe.”
