HAZMAT incident declared on farm after chemical spillage near stream

A hazardous material (HAZMAT) incident was declared at a Wiltshire farm yesterday.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to the chemical spillage on a farm property in Urchfont, near Pewsey, at around 11.20am.

Two fire crews – from Pewsey and Devizes – and a specialist HAZMAT fire officer attended the incident to find an agricultural chemical fertiliser leaking into the watercourse.

Environment Agency drain covers were put in place as a precaution while the origins of the leak were investigated by firefighters.

The stop message came in at 12.45pm, which is when the fire service says it was established that “the leak was due to ground seepage”.
