Dozens of firefighters battle large blaze at scrapyard in Swindon overnight

A large fire at a scrapyard in Swindon was battled by dozens of firefighters overnight.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the blaze at EMR in Gipsy Lane in Swindon at shortly after 2am this morning.

Crews from Swindon (two), Stratton (two), Westlea and Stroud, as well as a water carrier from Royal Wootton Bassett and the Aeriel Ladder Platform from Swindon, attended the incident.

A large amount of scrap metal and recycling products were found well alight, but firefighters had the fire surrounded by 3.15am and made good progress using foam jets.

The fire created a substantial smoke plume in the area so local residents were asked to close their windows and doors.

Firefighting action was ceased due to the bunded area becoming overwhelmed by water runoff. Firefighters worked with the onsite management team to divert the water to a secondary area and resumed fighting the fire until the blaze was confirmed extinguished at 6.30am.
