Police establish checkpoint at popular National Trust site as tourists continue to visit

A temporary lockdown checkpoint has been set up by police in Lacock this morning.

Officers are in the area responding to concerns over breaches of the national lockdown laws in place to limit the spread of coronavirus.

In Twitter, off-duty inspector Louis McCoy said it was “Good to see [Chippenham Area Community Policing Team] out in [Lacock] responding to concerns over covid breaches and people travelling from outside the local area to exercise or socialise.”

Whilst the Lacock Abbey grounds remain open to the public, the government say people are prohibited from travelling outside the village, town or part of the city in which they live.

A local resident, who didn’t wish to be named, said: “The number of people visiting Lacock doesn’t appear to have changed. Slightly less maybe, but still lots of tourists.

“I’m glad to see the police are getting involved and dealing with people who are coming to the village from outside it.”
