Sitting on benches ‘banned’ as council removes seating areas on request of police

A council says it’s been told to remove benches from its town centre to prevent people from gathering during the coronavirus lockdown.

Devizes Town Council informed local residents that it would remove the seating from The Market Place on the request of Wiltshire Police.

Other permanently fixed seating will remain, but people are told not to sit on them unless it’s ‘absolutely necessary’.

“We have been asked by the Police to remove the picnic benches from the Market Place, to prevent people gathering during lockdown”, a councils spokesperson said.

Adding: “There are many other benches around the town that we cannot move, but we would ask that you do not use them unless it is an absolute necessity.

“As soon as the current lockdown restrictions are eased, we will put the benches back in position.

“Please continue to follow the Government guidelines, to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.”
