Lockdown looms: Coronavirus restrictions ‘probably about to get tougher’

A lockdown looms over England as the Prime Minister says that coronavirus restrictions are ‘probably about to get tougher’ in a bid to stop the virus.

“It may be that we need to do things in the next few weeks that may be tougher”, Boris Johnson told the BBC broadcaster Andrew Marr this morning.

Adding: “I’m fully reconciled to that. I think the whole country is fully reconciled to that.”

The Prime Minister was quick to defend the government’s decision not to place England into a full lockdown for the entire year.

He said: “You could have been in lockdown all year. But the damage on people’s mental health, the gaps between rich and poor, would have been colossal.

“When you talk about how you should have locked down in September or done things differently. They had a lockdown in Wales in September, then they took the brakes off and the virus immediately surged again.”

Parents were urged to send their children to school, saying classrooms are “safe”.
