Man, 31, charged with arson with intent after Chippenham ‘crack den’ fire

A man’s been charged with arson with intent to endanger life after a fire was started at a flat in Chippenham earlier this year.

Emergency services were called to the blaze at a ground-floor flat in Charter Road at around 1.30pm on 22 September.

Three fire crews were sent and the flames were extinguished quickly on arrival. Nearby residents were evacuated to ensure their safety, but no one was injured in the blaze.

Neighbours say the property is as a “known crack den” with drug users visiting it frequently.

Kristian Cleverley, 32, of Moyne Close, Devizes, was arrested at the scene but later bailed.

Officers investigating the arson attack say they re-arrested the suspect and charged him with arson with intent to endanger life, which carries a possible life sentence.

Mr Cleverley appeared at Swindon Magistrate’s Court this morning and has been remanded in custody to next appear at Swindon Crown Court on 29 December.
