A 20-year-old local man was arrested soon afterwards on suspicion of robbery and is currently in custody.
Community Co-ordinator Alex Trombetta said: “We would like to hear from anyone who heard or saw anything suspicious in this area of Trowbridge in the early hours of today.
“This was a particularly nasty attack and we are still looking for other males who were involved in this incident; if you know of anyone involved or have any information which might help our investigation, please contact us.”
